East Fortune temporarily acted as Edinburgh's airport in early 1961 when
Turnhouse was closed to resurface it's Runway 13/31.
On Sunday 9 April 1961, the early afternoon BEA Viscount from London, landing eastward on East Fortune's
slightly downward sloping runway, ran off the end of the runway. It slewed to a stop on the grass
about 20 yards beyond the end of the runway. There were no casualties and the aircraft was not
damaged.
