Day 1

The best you could expect in road standards between Edinburgh and London in 1968 were stretches of dual carriagway on the A1. Motorways were still limited to the M1 - but to offset that, the traffic wasn't as heavy then as it is now. It took us just over 11 hours to get to London. We had a drive/look round central London - on a hot summer afternoon. Great! It was on this trip that I got my fascination for London - not knowing then that I would live/work there for a couple of years at the beginning of the 1970s.

From London we headed for Kent to camp at a site near Brands Hatch.

A stop for lunch somewhere on the A1. Looks like it was a strict diet of bananas. Note the trendy corduroy shoes! Heading south on the A1. Sweltering. An Austin A40 holding up a couple of Jags, and the rest, on the outside lane of the Northbound. Somewhere else on the A1 South-bound. Saturday afternoon. Parked in Bayswater Road, London. One of my first London impressions on that trip. No idea why I took the shot. But it captures .... something.
I can't resist taking shots of London buses. Pan Am - long gone. Setting up camp at West Kingsdown, Kent (near Brands Hatch).

Day 2

The day was spent at Brands Hatch - at the Festival of Minis: racing; procession of Minis of all shapes and sizes and a Red Arrows display. Another scorching day. From there, we headed for a camp site near Dover - to be ready for an early ferry crossing next morning.

Ah, the good old days at Brands Hatch when you could park your car on the hill and watch from there. Another view of the hill. We parked there - but I can't find the Van in the shot among all those Minis. Trendy Mini in the procession. A Moke in the procession. Not your usual motor racing fans - but this was the 1960s and it was a Mini-cult event. A little distraction in the crowd.
The Red Arrows put on a display in the afternoon. Equipped with Folland Gnats in those days. Mini racing - coming out of Clearways.
