Day 3

Uneventful Channel crossing on a fairly murky day. We wondered what we had let ourselves into in north France and Belgium - cobbles (on major roads), tramlines and sectional concrete roads. This went on for mile after mile, until we reached Namur when things improved radically. 300 miles of driving got us to Luxembourg, where we camped for the night.

Just about everyone must have taken this shot. Sailing from Dover. First shot in France. in the harbour at Bolougne. Trying to get out of Bolougne. Cobbles!. Still trying to get out of Bolougne. Advertising was a bit more liberated in France in the '60s.
Typical North France road - rubbish surface. At least it wasn't the miles and miles of cobbles we were about to encounter in South Belgium. This 2CV van was determined to show us that it's performance was superior to that of a Mini Van. It eventually passed us on a corner - on 2 wheels. The first Monday in June was some sort of national holiday. Fortunately the whole population of Belgium was going in the opposite direction to us. Eat your heart out Jean-luc Goddard. After miles of Belgian cobbles, this is more like it. In south Belgium, south of Namur, heading for Luxembourg. Luxembourg wasn't very inspiring - so here's a picture of an Icelandic Bristol Britannia at Luxembourg Airport.
A nice looking hangar. Well I thought so. Unseen in the UK - an Opel something-or-other.

Day 4

This was a real border-hopping day: Luxembourg - Germany - France - Germany - Switzerland. 400 miles (better roads, you see). Even had time for a quick look round in Basil, and stopped to camp overnight in Bern.

YSF parked up behind a Ferrari. Probably the first Ferrari I had ever encountered. Alastair getting down to photograph the Ferrari. Swiss street-scene. Swiss news-stand. Swiss street-scene.

Day 5

Switzerland was so clean! And the mountains so impressive. After a long run down through Switzerland we crossed into Italy through the Grand St Bernard Tunnel. Once the Italian Customs fathomed that we were Scottish, all they wanted to talk about was football. Not a long conversation there then.

As we drove south from the tunnel, an Innocenti Mini tried to pick a race with us. Well it was Italy! It passed us and disappeared at a rate that seemed a bit excessive for the road. We passed it about 5 miles later: it was in a ditch at the side of the road.

My only memory of Turin is that we found ourself heading the wrong way down a one-way 4-lane-wide street in the evening rush-hour.

From Italy we crossed into France through the Tunnel de Tende at 4,000ft. We stayed for the night in the home of friends of friends, Jean-George and Arianne Klein. J-G had given up teaching in Strasbourg and moved with his wife and 2 kids to Tende to paint. The house was primitive to say the least - but so was the whole of Tende.

What you expect in Switzerland - neat and tidy. Heading for Montreux. Heading for Montreux. Heading for Montruex. Heading for Montruex - along the side of Lake Leman.
Triumph bearing a Rosko sticker. (Emperor Rosko: Radio 1 DJ, noon on Saturdays.) Between Montreux and the Italian Border. Between Montreux and the Italian Border. Road and rail sharing the same valley. Heading for the St Bernard Tunnel to cross into Italy. Heading for the St Bernard Tunnel to cross into Italy. Not sure of the name of this village - but this photograph is one of my favourites from the whole trip.
Heading for the St Bernard Tunnel to cross into Italy. A few miles on from the previous photograph. Entering the St Bernard Tunnel. Innocenti Mini parked at the Italian Customs at the south end of the St Bernard Tunnel. An empty (and new) autostrada - heading to Turin.
Arrived at Tende, on an overcast evening. Left of a sequence of 3 photographs taken from the Klein's balcony. Arrived at Tende, on an overcast evening.
