Trust the French students to mess up our first trip to Le Mans. But I don't suppose they had us in mind when they were having their philosophical discussions about the future of their lives/country. So we made the best of a bad job. Not long before we left, we knew that France had basically shut down due to the national strike - shortages of everything. To minimise the effect of this, our idea was to take the shortest route possible round north and east France that would allow us to cross through countries bordering France to pick up fuel. The circuitous route south would take us (briefly) through countries that I had never visited before - and haven't since.

This was my kit. Laid out before loading up. Good to see I had Dream Topping, condensed milk and tins of maccaroni and cheese. Yes I know it's pretty sad to take a photograph of your luggage - but it was the first time I had done anything quite as adventurous as this - and anyway...

Having a Mini in those days (and taking it abroad), you had to be prepared for virtually everything - so we also took a fair number of special tools and a stock of spare parts for the things that we expected could fail.
